Brent Balfanz has a small closed school in
which he teaches TKD using Chang Hun and Bungai.
A quick and simple technique - lots of the forms have it.
Startout with the first low block. Then step forward punch, then
frame up to go to the next low block.
Let's look at the punch and the frame up. When we come out of the
punch, we come into a short cat stance as we transistion to the
next low block. We also frame up. I'm very big on the frame ups
within the katas. I believe they all have an application.
So, we low block with the left, step forward punch with the right,
pull back into the frame up putting the left arm across the chest
so the left fist is in front of the right armpit. The right arm
has the elbow resting on the left hand, which is in a fist, backside
of hand up. The right forearm is 45 degree across the face.
Application:
I use the reverse punch as a punch, knife or palm to the lung 1,
2 area on the aggressor. Since I'm using a right handed punch in
this example I target the left side of the aggressor who is trying
to grab at me with one or two hands. We practice with different
grab attempts. The left hand of the defendor doe a brush grab and
pulls in with it - this simulates the elbow strike which corrosponds
with the reverse punch. This is used as an off-balancing of the
aggressor.
The punch and the pull are used to stun, off balance and spin the
aggressor so we can slide in behind them to put on a naked choke
to the neck clusters. It's important to note that the left arm of
the defender ends up over the top of the aggressors shoulder with
the forearm on the left side of the neck. The right hand forearm
is on the aggressors right side of the neck. Now we apply the frame
up motion, turn the forearm up in an attempt to turn the palm towards
our own face. We never make it as the tap out usually comes as we
start applying the pressure to the clusters.
Simple application - basic technique. About the only thing we have
found that needs work is the clearing of the attackers arm on the
elbow strike side but as soon as the student grasps that idea it
works pretty well. You will even find the the stances assist in
the technique.
