Sunday was an excellent day for me.
All of our 'self-defence' (I hate that term) technqiues are taken from the patterns that the students are learning for that belt.
Right now everything is taught as an ideal, i.e., no resistance, complete surprise etc.
This Sunday however, myself and one of my students took it a level higher.
On went the shinguards, helmets, handmitts, and chest protectors.
Ray was told to try to get technique 8 from White and technique 1 from Yellow Tag on me anyway he could. Contact was to be 50% - 75%, with anything going.
We started facing each other kneeling (not enough mats for true movement etc) and on my command he had to come in (both techniques are actually offensive rather than defensive moves) and get the techniques on.
Bearing in mind that he had NEVER grappled, that he was probably giving away at least a stone (maybe two), has only been doing martial arts for about 8 months and was facing a geed up instructor, Ray did REALLY well.
He actually managed to get one of the linked techniques on to submit me and used Technique 8 to get me backed on numerous occasions.
Throughout the hour, his skill level went up noticeably. He started thinking out of the box, gave me some good head jabs, and even kneed me on my crown at one point (for which I headbutted him a bit later ).
I can really recommend just going for it in a controlled manner. We both got the giggles at points where we were both in headlocks and eating mat simultaneously and I'm sure that this helped relieve the tension.
This was one of the most enjoyable sessions I've had for a long time.

Hi Matt,
Sounds good.
Were these arm locks, wrist locks or finger locks?

technique 8 Level 10 was pre-emptive throw, leg reap mainly.
Technique 1 Level 9 was elbow to one side of neck, ridgehand to other and choke.
Ray then managed to get a variant on Tech1Lvl9 which uses the Gi across the neck in conjunction with low block. The counter to this (as we discoved once I'd choked) is to palm heel the elbow off across your neck (which absolutely canes and burns).

Yeah my left shoulder totally seized up yesterday, I was contemplating going home with the pain and lack of movement! But it eased up towards the afternoon. And the scar on my neck is seriously cool : )
I had a good time on Sunday though, twas good experience, and grappling is somthing we should do more of... especially the part where we punch each other in the head! hehe |

We also added some resistance last night to the 'ideal' techniques which cause me to have an epiphany and rant on to the rest of the class. Good though as we're starting to work on counters for our own techniques

Indeed! Everything from 10 - 8 has now been pressure tested to death (almost literally after I collapsed ray's lung(s) )
